Mindfulness Workshop With Tim Burnett: Having Mindful Holidays

Signing/Readings

Join local mindfulness practitioner Tim Burnett, Guiding Teacher and Executive Director of Mindfulness Northwest, for an exploration of mindfulness practices that promote awareness and well-being. We'll discuss the origins of mindfulness, touch on stress physiology, and explore how mindfulness practices can help us engage in our relationship to experience (such as the holiday season), reducing stress and enhancing well-being. Simple practices of breathing and mindful movement will support our discussion as we explore mindfulness from the inside out.

Katrina Carrasco: The Best Bad Things

Signing/Readings

It is 1887, and Alma Rosales is on the hunt for stolen opium. Trained in espionage by the Pinkerton Detective Agency, but dismissed for bad behavior and a penchant for going undercover as a man, Alma now works for Delphine Beaumond, the seductive mastermind of a West Coast smuggling ring. A propulsive, sensual tour de force, The Best Bad Things introduces Katrina Carrasco, a bold new voice in crime fiction. Katrina Carrasco holds an MFA in fiction from Portland State University, where she received the Tom and Phyllis Burnam Graduate Fiction Scholarship and the Tom Doulis Graduate Fiction Writing Award. Her work has appeared in Witness magazine, Post Road Magazine, Quaint Magazine, and other journals. The Best Bad Things is her first novel.

Ben Goldfarb Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter

Signing/Readings

In Eager, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America’s lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded, wetlands dried up, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today, a growing coalition of “Beaver Believers”—including scientists, ranchers, and passionate citizens— recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier, for humans and non-humans alike, than those without them. Eager is a powerful story about one of the world’s most influential species, how North America was colonized, how our landscapes have changed over the centuries, and how beavers can help us fight drought, flooding, wildfire, extinction, and the ravages of climate change. *This event is co-sponsored by the North Cascades Audubon Society.

The Giving Tree November 11 - December 31

Community Event

Happening in both our Fairhaven & Lynden stores. It is that time of year when the collaboration among book lovers, Village Books, and several community organizations provides the gift of reading to local children and families through Village Books’ Giving Tree. For the past 20 years we've provided books for thousands of kids who would not otherwise have received them. Last year alone, because of your generosity, we gave books to almost 1300 children through eight local organizations. How can you help? Choose an angel ornament from the tree in the store and purchase a book for a recipient. You will be offered a 20% discount for your Angel book purchase. The books will be distributed to kids, through community organizations, in the weeks before Christmas. Whether you pick up one angel this year, or ten angels, you can appreciate that the children of our community will enjoy a happier holiday season because of your gift. Here is a list of organizations to which we distribute books: Opportunity Council; Whatcom Center for Early Learning; Blue Skies for Children; NW Youth Services; Interfaith Coalition; DVSAS; and Brigid Collins House.
