Author Visit: Skein: The Heartbreaks & Triumphs of a Long Distance Knitter

Signing/Readings

In Skein: The Heartbreaks & Triumphs of a Long Distance Knitter, author Christen Mattix recounts how she stumbled upon an unusual way of meeting her Fairhaven neighbors when she decided to knit a half-mile blue rope from a public bench to Bellingham Bay. During those three and a half years of knitting at the bench, Mattix meets her loveable and quirky neighbors, visits a Trappist Monastery, falls in love, and transforms from introverted artist to a catalyst for community connections.

Putting Your Garden to Bed (or Not)

Most of the garden has been harvested, and it's looking pretty sad out there. If you didn't put in a winter garden (yes, we can grow veggies year round in our climate!), there are some things that you can do now to prepare your garden for next year that will help build good soil and prevent weeds. This workshop will provide guidelines for creating a healthier garden next year, as well as the benefits of starting a winter garden. Learn about how to plant fruit trees/bushes, divide perennials, and provide winter protection. Presented by Blaine C.O.R.E. (Community Orchards for Resources and Education).
