Soldering & Design: Swivel Lockets & Layered Pendants

Class/Workshop, Design, Jewelry/Gems

In this 5-week Tuesday evening workshop, students will learn how to create 3-dimensional forms using a circular locket or pendant as the basis of their design. We will utilize tools such as the dapping block, rolling mill, hammers. This workshop will revolve around basic metalsmithing skills learned in this class, such as sweat soldering, soldering multiple layers in a form, creating a hollow form, setting tube rivets, and more. Along with learned metalsmithing skills, we will review important design principles and motivations behind each student's project. Using a locket or pendant as our vehicle, we will discuss how to tell a story through imagery, texture, etc. or simply learn how to create a space for photos and/or imagery. Please note that depending on your individual work pace, you may need to finish locket outside of class time, although we anticipate that students should be able to finish locket during class time. Instructor: Leah Meleski. Prerequisites: Open to students who have taken beginning jewelry or have previous experience with basic skills such as sawing, filing, and roller printing. Tuesdays, Oct 30, Nov 6, 13, 20, & 27. For more details and to register, visit us online.

Rivet Set Gemstone Pendant

Class/Workshop, Design, Jewelry/Gems

This workshop, reviews basic metalsmithing skills including a variety of rivets. We will use these skills to create an original layered pendant that sets a cabochon or faceted gemstone between two or more textured sheets of metal. Design principles are important to consider and will be discussed in preparation for students to plan their original design. Students will make their own rivet sample that includes a standard rivet, a flush rivet and a tube rivet. Students will compose sketches for their pendant using various design templates. We will also consider how each type of rivet can both enhance and perform the functions necessary to complete their designed pendant. Lastly, we will review finishing techniques (patinas and polishing) that can enhance your finished pendant. Instructor: Leah Meleski. Prerequisites: Beginning jewelry or basic sawing, filing, and roller printing skills. 5 Wednesday evenings: Jan 9, 16, 23, 30, & Feb 6, 2019.
