Forging & Drawing Down Wire - Beginning Jewelry Series

Jewelry/Gems, Design

Students will learn how to manipulate the shape and/or thickness of wire through processes such as forging as well as using a draw plate. Forging is the art of controlled hammering to change the shape of metal, whether it be wire or thick sheet metal. Forging metal can be used both sculpturally and in smaller scale for your jewelry, adding volume to your artwork. Class will delve into the importance of manipulating stock materials when creating original art jewelry. Instructor: Leah Meleski. Prerequisites: Open to adults wanting to learn new skills & students have taken a Beginning Jewelry Metalsmithing Class or equivalent and are familiar with the jewelry studio. Rivets - Beginning Jewelry Series

Jewelry/Gems

Students will learn how to how to create several types of rivets including a standard rivet, a flush rivet and a tube rivet. We will also consider how each type of rivet can both enhance and perform the functions necessary to complete any project. Rivets are a great tool to use in jewelry because you can utilize them to not only connect metal, but other materials as well. This class is perfect for starting your own torch-less home studio practice. Instructor: Leah Meleski. Prerequisites: Open to adults wanting to learn new skills. Wax Carving

Jewelry/Gems

This class will allow you to create a unique wax model for a ring band or a pendant. You will use appropriate tools for carving or adding wax. This technique is suitable for a 3 dimensional figurative or abstract design that may not be achieved with direct metalsmithing. The finished wax will be sent out for the casting process. Introduction to Etching & Plating Metals

Class/Workshop, Education, Benefit/Fundraiser, Jewelry/Gems

This 2-day class is an introduction to some techniques for creating wonderful relief patterns in metal using chemical etching as a process. It will also cover an introduction to the process of plating one metal such as gold or silver onto another metal such as copper. During the class each participant can select their pattern then using their own kit, etch a piece of brass or copper. Participants will then gold electroplate a small piece of previously salt water etched material using the same type of equipment that they used for the salt water etching. Students will go home with their own etching kit & their own etched & plated sample piece. Instructor: Walt Hekala. Chasing & Repousse 101

Jewelry/Gems

For beginning to advanced metalsmiths and jewelers. This 2-day workshop will cover basic repousse and chasing skills. Students will complete one piece of repousse, using a simple design provided by instructor. Topics of discussion will be design transfer, thinking of design set up for the project, chasing tools & makers, hammers, different types of repousse, setting up to work on a piece in pitch and an ergonomically positive workspace. Chasing tools and pitch will be provided by BMAG. Chasing and repousse resources to be provided by instructor. Instructor: Judy Laub. Prerequisites: Open to adults. Lots of annealing is involved in this process so students should be comfortable using a torch. Instruction provided on annealing. A weekend class on Sept 28 & 29, 2019, 10am-5pm.
