Plants for Birds


Your backyard is your outdoor sanctuary. With some careful plant choices, it can be a sanctuary for nesting and overwintering birds, as well as, a recharge station for migrating birds. Join us as local native plant specialists and a representative from the City of Bellingham’s Landscaping for Wildlife program provide us with the information we need to create our own backyard bird haven.

Rooted, Revived, Reinvented: Basketry in America — Curators Share an Intimate View

Talks/Lectures, Tour

At 1pm in the Rotunda Room of Old City Hall, Kristin Schwain will present a slideshow, “Canastromania: Or How Basket Fever Transformed American Basketry from 1890 to 1940.” Following her talk, walk over to the Lightcatcher at 2:30pm for a fun and informative gallery tour with Jo Stealey. Both the talk and tour are included with regular Museum admission.

Fourth Sundays: Audubon at the Museum


Join experts from North Cascades Audubon Society in the John M. Edson Hall of Birds. In addition to displays of more than 500 mounted birds, the exhibit provides opportunities to learn about migration, conservation, birds in peril, and the importance of studying bird specimens today. The exhibit provides a variety of interactives, including video and audio files, and hands-on activities for children.

Rafting the Marsh Fork of the Canning River


Join us on a twelve-day wilderness birding adventure with wildlife photographer Dan Streiffert along the western boundary of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Called “America’s Serengeti” for its tremendous biological productivity and diversity, the coastal plain is one of the most intact and untouched ecosystems in America. Experience this trip through his camera with magnificent photos of the journey.

Art Show

Hidden in the Bundle features a selection of baskets from the Whatcom Museum’s extensive Native American and First Nations collection, representing different eras and cultures and highlighting the unique and unexpected.
