West Side Story

West Side Story takes the most famous romantic drama of all time, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and sets it loose in epic fashion on the streets of 1950s New York, finding two idealistic young lovers caught between warring street gangs -- the Jets and the Sharks. The famed 1961 film adaptation won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and the story has enjoyed many Broadway revivals, the latest in 2009. Written by the creative dream team of Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story's legendary jazz, Latin and classical-inspired score features treasured numbers like "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "I Feel Pretty" and "America."

Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lugh, patron of the arts, Lúnasa is indeed a gathering of some of the top musical talents in Ireland. Its members have helped form the backbone of some of the greatest Irish groups of the decade. Bassist Trevor Hutchinson was a key member of The Waterboys, and later he, with guitarist Donogh Hennessy, would form the dynamic rhythm section of The Sharon Shannon Band; Ed Boyd (Flook, Michael McGoldrick Band) has recently replaced Hennessy; Fiddler Sean Smyth is an All-Ireland champion who has played with Donal Lunny’s Coolfin; Kevin Crawford, considered to be among the finest flutists in Ireland played with the acclaimed traditional group Moving Cloud; and, piper Cillian Vallely of the famous Vallely artistic clan has performed with Riverdance and recently recorded with Bruce Springsteen. Folk Roots magazine has rightly termed them an “Irish music dream team.”

The Quebe Sisters

Bluegrass, Swing

The Quebe Sisters perform a blend of swing, jazz, country and traditional Texas-style fiddle tunes with intricate triple fiddles and three-part vocal harmony. When the Quebe Sisters from Texas take a stage, and the triple-threat fiddle champions start playing and singing in multi-part close harmony, audiences are usually transfixed, then blown away. It’s partly because the trio’s vocal and instrumental performances are authentic all-Americana, all the time, respectful of the artists that inspired them the most. And whether the Quebes (rhymes with “maybe”) are decked out in denims and boots or fashionably dressed to the nines in makeup, skirts and heels, the fresh-faced, clean-cut sisters, all in their 20s, look as good as they sound.
