Dye & Tie: Two-Day Japanese Gift-Wrapping Textiles Workshop

Textiles

During this two-day Japanese textile workshop, artist and university professor Seiko Atsuta Purdue will lead you in a hands-on exploration of the art of katazome, a traditional Japanese textile technique and basic kimono dyeing process, resulting in the creation of your very own furoshiki design. Furoshiki is traditionally a square silk cloth to wrap gifts, which is a beautiful and eco-friendly way to wrap everyday objects such as wine bottles and lunch boxes as an alternative to paper. On the first day, you will develop a repeating stencil design and learn the entire process of katazome, including paste-making and application. On the second day, we will dye the fabric with indigo, rinse the paste off, and explore wrapping different objects. Seiko Atsuta Purdue is Professor in the Fibers/Fabrics area in the Department of Art at Western Washington University. Day 1: Saturday, June 15, 10am – 3pm; Day 2: Sunday, June 16, 1 – 4pm.

Van Gogh for the Youth - An art auction to benefit Growing Alliances

Painting

https://gardenoflife.global/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Van-Gogh-Flyer.pdf; https://www.facebook.com/events/312591072768851/. Garden of Life, Studio UFO - Trish Harding and friends, and Growing Alliances get together to create a fundraiser for the At-risk youth of Whatcom County. Growing Alliances provides youth professional development training and gardening skills to foster responsibility and independence. Using mankind’s oldest way of bonding and creating strong friendships that carry through life, youth are taught to grow, cook and share food. Join us for an evening of classical music, friends, friendly up bidding and catering by Chef Arlen of Room for One More. Studio UFO, Trish Harding and friends, have created beautiful art pieces in a theme of After Van Gogh, for the Youth for this exciting live auction. 70% of the proceeds go to Growing Alliances, and 30% to the artists. Garden of Life, Bellingham WA is a movement which supports gardening as a way to build community. Bern Jacqueline loves Van Gogh and as Vincent Van Gogh was a struggling artist, respects the value put in by the donors, the artists. Our goal of raising $25,000 to keep the youth employed this summer 2019 in the gardens.

“Clothes to Quilts” Workshop with Luke Haynes

Textiles

Join modern quilt artist Luke Haynes for a modern abstract quilting workshop suitable for all abilities—from beginners to experts. Students are asked to bring clothing or fabrics that hold a personal meaning to the workshop to be honored in the form of a quilt (college t-shirts, old baby clothes, etc.). Haynes will lead participants in a series of fabric “deconstruction,” in which students are given “permission to play” and proceed to cut the fabric into various abstract-shaped pieces. The cut fabric pieces are then gathered into “yardage” and sewn into interesting, patterned squares. All types of quilt-making processes will be covered in this full-day workshop. Haynes’ quilt, [The American Context #68] Double Elvis, is featured in Modern Quilts at the Lightcatcher. Co-presented by the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.

Hand Quilting Workshop: Intro and Inspiration with Marla Varner

Textiles

In this workshop, we will explore ways to add texture, line, and color to your quilts using hand quilting, fiber artist Marla Varner’s favorite way to finish a quilt. You will be introduced to basic hand-quilting techniques and learn about a variety of threads, needles, batting, hoops, thimbles and other tools. Hand quilting is a very simple process, and once you know the basics you can begin practicing and develop your own style. Varner will share her quilts, her love of hand quilting, and her personal preferences. In addition, you will receive a resource list of tutorials and materials to help you explore on your own, following the workshop. Co-presented by the Pacific Northwest Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum.
