Art Show

There are three key things to know about Fibers & Beyond! First, is the amazing keynote speaker, John Mullarkey, who will be discussing tablet weaving in a creative, contemporary way. He’s an Internationally-recognized teacher that has been tablet weaving for over a decade. The event is called Warping the Fabric of Time and will be on Wednesday, October 10 at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $10. The second big thing to know is that there are ten different fibers classes happening between October 10-13! Learn how to work with weaving, nuno felt, and eco-printing. lastly, the Fibers & Beyond sale will wrap the fun up! This will be Saturday, October 13 from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. The Jansen Art Center welcomes back the popular Whatcom Weavers Sale featuring items selected by the Whatcom Weavers Guild. This sale is open to the public with free admission. Each year, the sale features the artwork of textiles artists from around the region. It is one of the most popular textile sales of the year in the Pacific Northwest.

Lynden Music Fest Welcomes YouTube Sensation of 4 Million Views

Acoustic, Blues, Americana/Roots, Jazz

This year the Lynden Music Festival Welcomes YouTube Star Matthew Ball aka The Boogie Woogie Kid, who became a hit on Youtube with now over 4.2 million views. Ball is known best as the attorney turned musician whose playing has earned him descriptions like “Awesome!” “Crushing!” Fantastic!” and dubbed him “The Fastest Fingers in the Mid-west!”

Call to Arts: Falling out of the Box Jewelry Challenge


Registration is open for jewelry artists interested in participating in the 2018 "Falling Out of the Box Jewelry Challenge" at the Jansen Art Center. This year's challenge is inspired by torch songs and will involve creating a wearable piece of metal jewelry. Artists of all skill level are encouraged to participate - the challenge involves the fabrication of metal jewelry from supplies provided in the mystery Material Box. In order to participate, artists register by purchasing a Material Box. The boxes will be mailed to participating artists the first week of September, and the deadline to return completed projects is October 12, 2018. The challenge is limited to 75 participants.

Ice Cream Social at the J

Ceramics/Pottery, Benefit/Fundraiser, Food/Tasting

The Ceramics Studio at the Jansen Art Center will be hosting its annual Ice Cream Fundraiser to benefit the studio. Ceramic artists and students have been busy making bowls, which will be on sale for $10 each. Get your bowls filled with delicious ice cream. If you’d prefer to just get the ice cream, we’ll scoop you up a dish for $5.00. The money raised from this event will support the Ceramics Studio, providing artists a place to create bowls, vases, sculptures, and more. It should be a fun event with a sweet treat to go along with supporting something great. Stop by the Jansen Art Center on October 13 to get a scoop on all of the action.

Fibers & Beyond Sale at the Jansen

Textiles, Art Show, Folk Art/Crafts

Shop for one-of-a-kind fashion and home décor items at the 2018 Fibers & Beyond Show and Sale presented by Whatcom Weavers Guild. Gita Moulton is shown at last year’s sale, enjoying the handwoven blanket she was purchasing. Most of the items at the sale have never been displayed before and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Falling Out of the Box Opening Reception

Art Show, Jewelry/Gems

Join others at the Opening Reception for the "Falling Out of the Box Jewelry Challenge" at the Jansen Art Center. This year's challenge is inspired by torch songs and will involve creating a wearable piece of metal jewelry. This year there are over 35 participants, 14 of which participated last year. Each artist will get 5 weeks to complete their piece using the identical materials given in their box, who will then get evaluated by a panel of judges and then by the attendees for the People’s Choice Awards. Pianist Paul Klein will perform. The Firehall Cafe will be open. Feel free to walk around the center and enjoy the four other Fall Exhibits, featuring incredible artists like Cynthia Camlin.

Cascadia Dreams at the J


Celebrate the sublime landscapes of the Pacific Northwest at Cascadia Dreams. Cascadia Dreams is a multimedia presentation featuring stunning images and mesmerizing video of our local mountains, rivers, beaches, and the Salish Sea, accompanied by a live performance by Native American flute master Gary Stroutsos. This special presentation highlights the passionate photography of John D’Onofrio and Lance Ekhart (with additional time-lapse video by Brett Baunton) in an elegiac tapestry of sight and sound that includes new images and video as well as a newly recorded backing score by some of the Pacific Northwest’s most innovative musicians. Stroutsos will introduce the presentation with a solo performance and storytelling, drawing on his decades of immersion in native cultures. A reception with the artists will follow the performance.
