Wednesday Lunchtime Music: Doris Mae Bajema (Sept 27)

As a part of the Wednesday Lunchtime Music program, the Jansen Art Center would like to present pianist Doris Mae Bajema on September 27. She is a Washington State certified piano teacher whose hard work inspires others to master the art of playing the ebony and ivory keys, playing familiar and lighthearted pieces for everyone to enjoy. Enjoy delicious soups, salads and sandwiches from the Firehall Cafe while listening to live music in our Piano Lounge. There is no cover. Tips for the performers are always appreciated.

Live Music in the Piano Lounge: High Spirits

Every Thursday night, the J invites you to enjoy live music in the piano lounge while enjoying drinks and food from the Firehall Cafe. This week, we welcome High Spirits back to the Piano Lounge! High Spirits brings an eclectic mix of old jazz favorites, originals, classic tunes with a slight twist, folk country rock, and a touch of the blues.

Mostly Broadway Firefly Concert Series

The Jansen Art Center is proud to present “Mostly Broadway,” a concert featuring Tracy Neff and Jerri Mercer. In the first Firefly Concert of the 2017-2018 season, “Mostly Broadway”, pianist Jerri Mercer will be accompanying singer Tracy Neff. Mercer met Neff when she was Mercer’s featured student in the Young People’s Concerts in the 1990’s. The two have remained friends and colleagues ever since. Both have a lifetime of experience in the world of music.

Cascadia Dreams featuring Native American Flute Master Gary Stroutsos

Celebrate the sublime landscapes of the Pacific Northwest at Cascadia Dreams, a multimedia presentation featuring stunning images & mesmerizing video of our local mountains, rivers, beaches & the Salish Sea, accompanied by a live performance by Native American flute master Gary Stroutsos. This special presentation highlights the passionate photography of John D'Onofrio & Lance Ekhart (with additional video by Brett Baunton) in an elegiac tapestry of sight & sound. A reception with the artists will follow the performance.

Rehearsal for the Jansen Jazz Band Winter Session concert begins on Monday, October 9 and runs through November 13. Rehearsals are from 7 pm - 9 pm. The Winter Session performance takes place on Thursday, November 16 at 7:30 PM. This community band, directed by Steve Herrick, is open to adults and teens ages 16 and older. If you are interested in playing with the Jansen Jazz Band, please register on the Jansen Art Center’s website.

Fibers & Beyond Keynote Address at the J!

The Keynote Address, "My Job as a Weaver," is presented by Dr. Susan Pavel – sa’hLa mitSa. Dr. Susan Pavel will share the journey of 20 years of Coast Salish Weaving and the intention of the next 20 years of Coast Salish Weaving. Her master teacher, Bruce Miller – subiyay of the Skokomish Nation, shared many cultural teachings that still unveil themselves to this day. Stories will be shared, current research efforts revealed, and a possibility for the future galvanized.

Opening Reception for the "Falling Out of the Box" Jewelry Challenge at the J!

The Jansen Art Center presents the 3rd Annual Falling Out of the Box jewelry exhibit, titled "Holding Space," on display from October 12 through December 1, 2017. The Opening Reception will take place on Thursday, October 12 from 6 pm until 8 pm, featuring a Live Music in the Piano Lounge performance by jazz and gospel musician Checo Tohomaso. This will be the third year of the Falling Out of the Box jewelry challenge, coordinated once again by Judith Gauthier. Guests will be invited to vote for their favorite entry for the People’s Choice Awards at the reception from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, with the awards ceremony occurring at 7:45 pm.

Ceramics Studio Ice Cream Fundraiser at the J!

Benefit/Fundraiser, Food/Tasting, Ceramics/Pottery

The three mystery ice cream flavors will be provided by Edaleen Dairy. For $5, you can buy a couple of scoops of ice cream in a paper bowl, but for $10, you can get a couple of scoops of ice cream in your very own ceramics bowl! The bowls provided for the fundraiser have been made by local artists and students from the Jansen Art Center. It should be a fun event with a sweet treat to go along with supporting something great.

2017 Fibers & Beyond Conference at the J!

The Whatcom Weavers Guild presents the 2017 Fibers & Beyond Conference and Sale at the Jansen Art Center in Lynden, Washington. This event includes a Keynote Address on Coast Salish Weaving with Dr. Susan Pavel, 9 classes and workshops, the popular Annual Whatcom Weavers Guild Sale, and the Fibers & Beyond Exhibit. The Keynote Address takes place Wednesday, October 11 at 7 pm. The Fibers & Beyond Exhibit opened prior to the conference, on Thursday, September 7 with an artist reception from 6 pm – 8 pm.
