Ragfinery - Introduction to Eco-Printing

Textiles, Class/Workshop

Create vivid patterns on fabric using foliage and other elements from nature. This simple, eco-friendly dyeing technique uses a direct contact printing method, drawing out pigments from plants to make interesting and sometimes surprising designs on fabric. Transform plain silk scarves into beautifully printed, one-of-a-kind pieces. Participant Materials and Requirements: All materials provided. Optional: participants may wish to collect Autumn leaves and preserve them (dry or freeze) to experiment with various outcomes. Blackberry leaves, oak, maple, hydrangea, hazelnut, walnut, and red rose bush leaves are all know to produce beautiful results. Eucalyptus will be provided.

Ragfinery - Sewing Bootcamp

Class/Workshop

Learn to upcycle or alter your own clothes in this beginning sewing “bootcamp” series! Get familiar with the care and use of your sewing machine and solving basic sewing problems, take accurate body measurements and learn to fit items to your own aesthetic and body type! Sew a knit cap in the first class, and move on to constructing a garment or other project of your choice, such as a knit or woven dress, top, skirt, or pant. We will focus on embellishments and finishing touches specific to your project, i.e. pockets, zippers, buttons/buttonholes, hems, etc. Take away a short guide and reference list to assist you in applying your new skills at home. Please note that you will be working on the Ragfinery Baby Loc machines and we will not be working with patterns. Participant and Materials Requirements: Materials for the first project will be provided, and Brigitte will make every effort to choose the correct sewing tools suitable for your next project of choice. If you know what garment you will be working on, please bring it to the first session. Note: This workshop is held on two consecutive Saturday mornings, 1/20 & 1/27.

Introduction to Weaving

Class/Workshop

Workshop is now full. If you would like to be added to our waiting list, please call the shop. This class runs three consecutive Saturdays from 2/3 to 2/17. The first workshop will be from 10 am-noon and the last two will be from 10am-1pm. In a series of three Saturday morning sessions, learn to plan a weaving project and what materials to use, warp a loom, and create your own 2’ by 4' rug.

Coiled Fabric Baskets

Class/Workshop

This class will teach you to make sturdy baskets from almost any kind of scrap fabric! Thick strips of fabric are twisted and bound together with yarn, strong cotton string, or thin strips of more fabric. Many possibilities await!

Sashiko Style Mending

Class/Workshop

Sashiko mending is a Japanese style of visible mending that uses embroidery stitching to create beautiful surface designs. It’s simple to learn, but has endless style variations. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of sashiko and various sashiko patterns and styles of mending. You will design a sashiko patch, and go home with a plan for your own sashiko project.

Upcycled Valentines

Who do you love? It’s time to tell them! Drop by Ragfinery and make a quick upcycled Valentine for a special someone. We’ll provide the vintage patterns, fabric scraps, paper, and other embellishments; you provide the creativity. If you have some sentimental fabrics of your own, bring them along to incorporate into your design. This drop-in session is by donation

Needle Felted Hummingbird

In this workshop you will sculpt wool roving into a delicate bird to hang in your window, use as a gift topper, or add to anything else in need of cheer and whimsy. You won’t believe how easy it is. No-Sew Braided Rugs

Class/Workshop

Come learn how to craft a beautiful no-sew braided rug from old sheets. This four strand technique eliminates the need for sewing braids together and results in a sturdy rug able to withstand the modern washer and drier. These rugs are a great way to keep worn, torn, ugly or stained fabrics out of the landfill.
