Primary Election Candidates Forum

Community Event, Politics, Education, TV Show Taping

Have you ever wondered why there are never more than two candidates to choose from on a November ballot? It’s because only the top two vote-getters in the Primary advance to the General Election ballot. Voters can find a lot more choices on the Primary ballot, mailed to them in mid-July. To highlight the many choices on the primary ballot, the League of Women Voters of Bellingham/Whatcom County is hosting a public candidate forum from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at Bellingham High School (2020 Cornwall Avenue). Sandwiches will be available by donation during the noon lunch break, giving candidates and voters an opportunity for informal discussion. All candidates in local races who appear on the primary ballot have been invited, and will participate in a moderated forum, answering questions from the moderator. Attendees will be invited to submit their questions as well. For voters living in the 40th District, the relevant races will be covered between 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. For voters living in the 42nd District, the relevant races will be covered between 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The forum will be video recorded and broadcast on BTV10 and available on demand at cob.org. Schedule: 9 a.m. – Doors open. 9:30 a.m. – Welcome and review of the rules and format. 9:45 a.m. – 40th Legislative District Representative, Position 1. 11 a.m. – Whatcom County Council At-Large, Position B. 12 p.m. – Lunch break. 1:15 p.m. – Reconvene. 1:30 p.m. – Court of Appeals Judge, Division 1, District 3, Position 1. 2:45 p.m. – 42nd Legislative District Senator. 3:30 p.m. – 42nd Legislative District Representative, Position 1. The Bellingham Herald is media sponsor of the event, and the City of Bellingham provides recording and broadcast support.
