Bellingham City Club hosts Candidate Forums

Bellingham City Club invites the public to their 2019 Candidate Forum Series. The first of two forums will feature the two candidates vying for the Bellingham Mayor’s seat pending the outcome of the August 6 Primary Election. The forum will be held following a community lunch at Northwood Hall, 3240 Northwest Ave, Bellingham on Wednesday, August 28. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and tickets are available via Brown Paper Tickets and on our website at bellinghamcityclub.org. Candidates will have the opportunity to give an opening statement, respond to questions from our moderator as well as questions from City Club members. The Mayor is an elected position with a 4 year term. Duties are established by city charter and statutes. The annual salary for the position is $165,600. Bellingham’s Mayor: • is the chief executive and administrative officer of the City with the prime responsibility of coordination and supervision of the activities of all departments and employees of the City. • has the power to appoint and remove all appointive positions. • makes certain that all laws and ordinances are faithfully enforced and that law and order is maintained in the City and supervises the administration of City government. • reviews & approves (or not) official bonds and bonds of contractors with the City. • attends all regular meetings of the City Council (or may have a delegate attend in his/her stead). • presents a proposed budget to the council for approval as required by law. The public is welcome to attend this event, but only members are allowed to ask the candidates questions. Becoming a member is encouraged. Candidates for the Whatcom County Executive position will face off on September 25 at the second forum of the City Club series. More information will be shared closer to the event.
