Teen Tuesdays at the Lightcatcher

Education

Join Museum educators on Tuesdays in July for museum exploration and hands-on workshops related to art, science, and natural history. For ages 11-18 years old. Register by contacting Emily Dieleman, 360.778.8960 or ejdieleman@cob.org. Registration closes one week prior to each program and must be paid in advance. July 3: Explorations in Printmaking: First, tour the Crow’s Shadow Institute of Art at 25 exhibition in the Lightcatcher galleries, then learn about various printmaking techniques. Participants will carve their own linoleum block and create beautiful block prints using the tools provided. July 10: Discover Northwest Coast Traditions: Visit the Museum’s People of the Sea and Cedar exhibit and learn about local Northwest Coast Native traditions and art, both historical and contemporary. Afterward participants will learn how to create cedar bark mats, weave with wool, and make twine from various plant materials. July 17: Collaging History: Creating Artwork from the Archives: Visit the Whatcom Museum’s photo archive collection and learn about the thousands of historical photos from photo archivist and historian Jeff Jewell. We’ll use photos from Whatcom County’s history to create a unique collage art piece. July 24: Birds of a Feather: Life Drawing Together: Explore the Museum’s founding collection of more than 500 mounted birds in the John M. Edson Hall of Birds. Learn to sketch birds from “life” using various drawing materials, then move to the Lightcatcher Studio to create a more in-depth bird drawing using oil pastels. July 31: Living Green: Energy And Environmental Design: Get an up-close and personal behind-the-scenes tour of the Whatcom Museum’s LEED Silver® certified Lightcatcher building. Learn all about this green structure, from the recycled materials used to build it to how it utilizes green systems to be as sustainable as possible. Participants will have the chance to be an “architect” for the day and create a building model made out of recycled materials.
