In Torda, Transylvania—in the year 1568—King John Sigismund proclaimed: “…no one shall be reviled for their religion by anyone… and it is not permitted that anyone should threaten anyone else by imprisonment... For faith is the gift of God...” This edict of religious tolerance is one of our origin stories, referring to the birth of our legacy as a spiritual tradition that resists hatred, oppression, and the narrow view that there is only one way to be religious.
